I live in Madison, Wisconsin, and this past year, I’ve been everything from sailing instructor, to biology TA, to barista. I usually spend my summers in a boat or on a bike, but this year I’m excited to tackle some mountains instead. Audrey Payne Hi, everyone! Glowstick here, a Appalachian Trail NoBo thru-hiker. You could call it the “seven year itch” – after almost seven years working a desk job in our nation’s capital, I decided to leave my great job and head out into the wilds to reconnect with nature and have a great adventure. When I’m not hiking or working, of course , I can usually be found at the climbing gym, a music festival, daydreaming about my next big trip, or wandering about with a large cup of coffee caffeine addict right here. Future ambitions include hiking the PCT, learning to mountaineer, and maybe adopting dog. I have dealt with that primarily by running, swimming and hiking as often as possible in hot Orlando. As I recently celebrated 20 years of working in communications and marketing at a large research university I began to wonder what it would feel like to write less about science and more about day-to-day life.

He is clearly the most influential character in the comic book super-hero genre. The character of Superman, however, has always been depicted as having been raised with a solidly Protestant upbringing by his adoptive Midwestern parents – Jonathan and Martha Kent. Of Clark’s parents, Martha is the more devout churchgoer. Clark Kent was raised as a Methodist.

While growing up in Smallville, Kansas, Clark Kent attended Sunday church services at the local Methodist church with his mother, Martha Kent, every week until he was fourteen years old. These aspects of the character are not speculative, but are canonical – established by in-continuity published DC Comics.

Two characters can be competing for the same goal, without one of them even aware of the competition. Maybe the reason they haven’t picked up on the rivalry is that it is hard to take their rival seriously.

The rocky planets, our four gas giants, and the moons, asteroids, comets, and kuiper belt objects which was only Pluto and Charon at the time were all that we knew of. But these were just the worlds around our Sun, which houses according to current definition eight planets. Free Roaming Photography, by Mike Cavaroc. There are a vast variety of stars out there in our galaxy. Our Sun is just one example — a G-class star — of seven different main types. Wikipedia user Kieff; annotations by me.

We may think of our Sun as being typical and on the relatively dim side, since a disproportionate number of stars visible to our eyes in the night sky are O, B, and A-class stars. But that is not necessarily how stars exist in the galaxy, either. My point is this: For individual image credits, see lower left. And the transit method, where the light coming from a distant star is partially blocked by the disk of a planet in its solar system passing in front of it.

But that does not mean that there are only a few planets-per-hundred-stars.

When we plan Nerd Nite, we look for variety. Something a little science, something a little arts, and something way out of left field. Your obsessive nerd bosses have delivered this month. Well, mission accomplished, nerds. Tuesday, October 23, doors 7: Whether you want to believe it or not, a lot of our news is adjusted for reality and that means fake news. In fact, plenty of important data that economists and policy makers use tell us that conditions in the winter are the same as summer months.

Join economist Nick Ford as he peels back the seasonal adjustments of some data types. Nick will also show that by only selecting and reporting seasonally adjusted data, we actually encourage consumer complacency. Even worse, that this can lead to loss of culture. Nick is proud to sit on the Nuit Blanche Edmonton board and previously served on his community league board.

More Today, we tackle football. At the end of the 19th century, football is a nascent and nasty sport. But then the Carlisle Indian School, formed in to assimilate the children and grandchildren of the Native American men who fought the final Plains Wars, fields the most American team of all. The kids at Carlisle took the field to face off against a new world that was destroying theirs, and along the way, they changed the fundamentals of football forever.

An earlier version of this episode included a few errors that we have corrected. We’ve also added one new piece of information. The piece originally stated that British football had no referees.

Henry bought the club in and promoted little-known Theo Epstein, a then year old Yale graduate with a law degree, who became the youngest general manager in baseball. Epstein built a team based on sabermetrics, and two years later the Red Sox had their first World Series championship in 86 years, with two more to follow in the next nine years. Henry has also hired sabermetrics godfather Bill James as a senior advisor and Tom Tippett as director of baseball information services.

Tippett helped create Carmine, the team’s proprietary baseball information system. Carmine puts customized data just a few clicks away, allowing the Red Sox to combine various kinds of data and estimate future performance. Henry and the Sox have shown time and time again that they are playing the long game, willing to make unconventional moves and suffer through short-term failures for a higher expected return.

It might just be that the rival is so much weaker, that they can’t be considered a serious threat. Whatever the reason, the rival is competing for the same thing as the other character. Objectives for competition may be the fair maiden’s hand, simple revenge, a pot of gold, the title of “World’s Best Whatever”, or the extra-special MacGuffin of the week.

This is common with non-evil antagonists, giving writers a character who can be a source of tension without necessarily being a bad guy. See also We Meet Again , which is usually followed by a “Have we met before?

Impact on creators[ edit ] In the years that followed the creation of Anarky, both Norm Breyfogle and Alan Grant experienced changes in their personal and professional lives which they attributed to that collaboration. Each man acknowledged the primary impact of the character to have been on their mutual friendship and intellectual understanding. In particular, their time developing the Anarky series led to a working relationship centered on esoteric debate, discussion, and mutual respect.

During this period, Breyfogle came to suspect that the treatment each man, and Anarky, had received from their former employer was suspect. I see it in the treatment from Wikipedia; I see it in the treatment toward Alan Grant from DC Comics; I see it in the treatment from mainstream media and the establishment. For example, Wikipedia editor alf laylah wa laylah recently went to the Integrated Management Associates i.
